MSLF worked in conjunction with the Inter-University Institute and the Ricci Institute of Macau to organize a seminar on Matteo Ricci. The seminar was sponsored by the Foundation for the Cooperation and Development of Macau, and was held at the Inter-University Institute on 9 April 2001. Dr. Joseph Levi from the University of Iowa was the guest speaker. Dr. Levi is a specialist in the Portuguese language, who recently spent time in Lisbon doing research on Matteo Ricci. His findings will be published soon to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Matteo Ricci in Beijing. The objectives of the seminar, as they are spelled out in the seminar brochure, were as follows:
- Celebrate the 400th year of the arrival of Matteo Ricci to China.
-
Show that the Macau SAR continues to play its historical role to generate
East-West cultural exchange.
-
Increase awareness of the dialogue between cultures and make it a pathway
for the understanding and flourishing of interculturality. The conference
was attended by approximately 100 people.
