Dr. Sun Yat-sen and his ties to the city of Macau were the basis for this conference sponsored by MSLF from 29-30 May 1999. Academics and specialists from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau discussed the contributions Sun made to Chinese modernity and the continuing relevance that his thoughts have today.

The Sun Yat-sen conference in May 1999 covered many aspects of Dr. Sun's contributions to China's political and cultural development. The topics ranged from Dr. Sun's participation in China's revolutions; ethnic identity in China; Dr. Sun's "Principles of the People"; educational and intellectual movements in China; and Dr. Sun's influence on China's foreign policies and economic, political, and cultural developments, past and present. There were 23 participants who presented papers at the two-day conference, from the United States, Taiwan, and China.
